Budget Knife Vise

A quick and easy way to secure your work that’s for the budget minded.

Background:

I started making knives as a hobby back in August of 2022. I was using my workbench vise to hold my work. I was getting frustrated at the difficulties with using it. Knives would slip, and I would continually have to readjust the vise to hold them. Eventually, the jaws began marring material. I wanted an easier way to clamp my knives down without spending an arm and a leg!

Supplies:

I built this knife vise using a piece of 4x4 scrap wood, a toggle clamp, and a few screws. I have power tools to cut the wood to length, and drill pilot screw holes. They are not necessary for this though. Below are links to the product(s) I purchased for this project.

Assembly:

First thing you will want to do is take the toggle clamp and align it where you will be putting it on your 4x4. Once you know where it is going to be mounted, mark the mounting holes.

Next, you can drill the pilot holes for the mounting screws. I just had extra construction screws lying around my shop. Just make sure they are long enough to secure the clamp properly.

After that, just toss your screws in, make adjustments to the hold down arm, and you’re good to go! These clamps are rated for 220lbs. of holding force.

Conclusion:

How I made this vise is not an exact science. These instructions do not need to be followed to the letter. You can absolutely take creative liberties with this.
